Dr. Aneela Javed is serving NUST since March 2013, holds a PhD in Molecular Medicine from Georg August University, Germany and Post-Docs from Harvard and Germany. She has also served as Visiting Assistant Professor at DUKE NUS Singapore.
One-Health Fellowship and Implementation: Dr. Aneela was among the first cohort of “One-Health Fellow” of the “U.S. National Academy of Sciences” (NASEM), bringing NUST into the National and International spotlight. She served as the "International Student One Health Alliance (ISOHA) Continent Representative for Asia," and for the first time introduced globally relevant course stream of One-Health in the MS Molecular Medicine program at ASAB. Subsequently, Dr. Aneela was selected as a member of the committee on regional guidelines for collecting and transporting high-consequence pathogens samples, to be implemented Nationally.
Contribution during Pandemic: Dr. Aneela's team developed Pakistan’s first DRAP-approved COVID testing kit and published the first full-length SARS-CoV-2 sequence from Pakistan, acknowledged internationally. This work, patented and licensed to a company, attracted numerous students to NUST’s Bioscience program, contributing to NUST and ASAB being ranked 3rd nationally in Biosciences. For her efforts during the pandemic involving extensive field testing and around-the-clock work she was nominated for “National civil awards” .
Fulbright Fellowship: Dr. Aneela was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Research Fellowship for research at Harvard Medical School, USA earning commendations from the former Rector NUST via letter. Every year she guides students and faculty for the same.
Research and Industry Linkages: Serving as HoD Research for two years, Dr. Aneela significantly enhanced ASAB’s research portfolio, industry linkages and internationalization efforts (in collaboration with ILO). She is currently head of the internationalization committee ASAB. She has extensive Research collaboration within NUST as well as across the country and internationally, as evident from projects and publications.
National and International Representation: Dr. Aneela was nominated for the “10-Member group of the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM)” and represented NUST Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and HEC for “Inter-Ministerial Coordination Meeting on Indigenous Vaccine Production” and focal person for “ Framework on Collaboration of IDL Project with Sister Labs Working on Infectious Diseases Surveillance and Control”. Served as “Member expert committee Higher education commission for Prioritizing Research relevant to Health and Health-related Sustainable Development Goals, served as evaluation committee member Pakistan Innovation Fund - Health Sector projects 2023 for planning commission Pakistan and “NUST Focal person for Ministry of Foreign Affair (MoFA) for HEC-MPI collaboration with Max Plank institute Germany “. Dr Aneela has also served as Faculty Deputy Head (Health and wellbeing) NUST.
Acknowledgement by National Figures: Dr. Aneela was acknowledged by Lt. Gen Tariq Waseem Ghazi, HI (M), former Secretary of Defense, for her contribution to a book translation, earning formal commendations from NUST leadership.
Teaching: Dr. Aneela has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses with an average student feedback score of 87.45%. She has extensively revised the “Immunology” curriculum at ASAB and fulfilled teaching responsibilities even during maternity leave.
Administrative Roles: Dr. Aneela has served on numerous institutional committees, including the Internationalization Committee, Institutional Review Board, Biosafety Committee, in charge of the Flow Cytometry Unit, Molecular Immunology, Immunotheranostic Lab, and Cell Culture Core Facility at ASAB.
Research Achievements: Dr. Aneela has been recognized as the “Best Researcher of the School” twice and received the Research Productivity Award by PCST in 2017. She has secured 16 grants totaling 185.62M PKR and has published 80 ISI-indexed journal papers with a cumulative impact factor of 284.45 1232 citations, and an H-index of 17. She has supervised 5 PhDs (1 co-supervised) and 22 MS students, besides numerous BS FYP projects. 3 PhDs and 12 MS students as supervisor and 3PhDs as co-supervisor are currently working with her.
